bob marley documentary (life)

               Bob Marley - Early Life

Bob and CedellaBob Marley was born Robert Nesta Marley on February 6, 1945. Bob was born to Cedella Marley when she was 18. Bob's early life was spent in rural community of Nine Miles, nestled in the mountainous terrain of the parish of St. Ann. Residents of Nine Miles have preserved many customs derived from their African ancestry especially the art of storytelling as a means of sharing the past and time-tested traditions that are oftentimes overlooked in official historical sources. The proverbs, fables and various chores associated with rural life that were inherent to Bob's childhood would provide a deeper cultural context and an aura of mysticism to his adult songwriting.
Norval and Cedella married in 1945 but Captain Marley's family strongly disapproved of their union; although the elder Marley provided financial support, the last time Bob Marley saw his father was when he was five years old; at that time, Norval took his son to Kingston to live with his nephew, a businessman, and to attend school. Eighteen months later Cedella learned that Bob wasn't going to school and was living with an elderly couple. Alarmed, she went to Kingston, found Bob and brought him home to Nine Miles.

Bob Marley begins his music career

The next chapter in the Bob Marley biography commenced in the late 1950s when Bob, barely into his teens, left St. Ann and returned to Jamaica's capital. He eventually settled in the western Kingston vicinity of Trench Town, so named because it was built over a sewage trench. A low-income community comprised of squatter-settlements and government yards developments that housed a minimum of four families, Bob Marley quickly learned to defend himself against Trench Town's rude boys and bad men. Bob's formidable street-fighting skills earned him the respectful nickname Tuff Gong.
Despite the poverty, despair and various unsavory activities that sustained some ghetto dwellers, Trench Town was also a culturally rich community where Bob Marley's abundant musical talents were nurtured. A lifelong source of inspiration, Bob immortalized Trench Town in his songs "No Woman No Cry" (1974), "Trench Town Rock" (1975) and "Trench Town", the latter released posthumously in 1983.
Early Wailers Line-up
By the early 1960s the island's music industry was beginning to take shape, and its development gave birth to an indigenous popular Jamaican music form called ska. A local interpretation of American soul and R&B, with an irresistible accent on the offbeat, ska exerted a widespread influence on poor Jamaican youth while offering a welcomed escape from their otherwise harsh realities. Within the burgeoning Jamaican music industry, the elusive lure of stardom was now a tangible goal for many ghetto youths.

Uncertain about the prospects of a music career for her son, Cedella encouraged Bob to pursue a trade. When Bob left school at 14 years old she found him a position as a welder's apprentice, which he reluctantly accepted. After a short time on the job a tiny steel splinter became embedded in Bob's eye. Following that incident, Bob promptly quit welding and solely focused on his musical pursuits.

At 16 years old Bob Marley met another aspiring singer Desmond Dekker, who would go on to top the UK charts in 1969 with his single "Israelites". Dekker introduced Marley to another young singer, Jimmy Cliff, future star of the immortal Jamaican film "The Harder They Come", who, at age 14, had already recorded a few hit songs. In 1962 Cliff introduced Marley to producer Leslie Kong; Marley cut his first singles for Kong: "Judge Not", "Terror" and "One More Cup of Coffee", a cover of the million selling country hit by Claude Gray. When these songs failed to connect with the public, Marley was paid a mere $20.00, an exploitative practice that was widespread during the infancy of Jamaica's music business. Bob Marley reportedly told Kong he would make a lot of money from his recordings one day but he would never be able to enjoy it. Years later, when Kong released a best of The Wailers compilation against the group's wishes, he suffered a fatal heart attack at age 37.

Waka Flocka Flame, Lil Wayne Team For 'Stay Hood' off Forthcoming 'DuFlocka Rant 2' Mixtape

Waka Flocka Flame Stay Hood Lil Wayne

Waka Flocka Flame's mixtape DuFlocka Rant 2 is set to drop tomorrow, but in the meantime the latest track to leak features a Lil Wayne guest verse and Lex Luger on the production.
"Stay Hood" features Waka's typical high energy rapping and a promise to never forget his hood roots.

Wayne's verse echoes the same sentiments, possibly the best line is his cough syrup shout out, "the mother f---ers like Robitussin."

Drake, 'Started From The Bottom': Critics and Tastemakers Weigh In

Kevin Mazur, WireImage On Friday night (Feb. 1), Drake quietly posted "Started From The Bottom," the first single from his upcoming LP, to his website.

"I feel sometimes that people don't have enough information about my beginnings and therefore they make up a life story for me that isn't consistent with actual events," Drake wrote. " I did not buy my way into this spot and it was the furthest thing from easy to achieve. I am proud of every part of my past and I'm excited for this song to find a place in your life as well."

Cool story, bro. But how does the song stack up to the rest of Drake's catalog? And isn't he from an upper-middle class background-- what bottom could he possibly be referring to?

We polled a few critics/tastemakers for their thoughts.

Chris Brown, Community Service Hours Update: Singer Appears in Court With Rihanna, Judge Schedules Another Hearing

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Chris Brown, accompanied by Rihanna, briefly returned to court Wednesday to face allegations he failed to complete his community labor sentence for Rihanna's 2009 beating, but the judge asked for more information and scheduled another hearing in two months.

Rihanna blew Brown a kiss as he entered the courtroom, and they left together after the short proceeding in which Superior Court Judge James Brandlin set the next hearing for April 5.

Prosecutors alleged this week that investigators could not find credible evidence he completed his community labor.

A motion filed Tuesday also raised for the first time in Brown's felony assault case several incidents that prosecutors said demonstrate Brown has ongoing anger management issues.

should students be turned away from school for incorrect uniform?

should students be turned away from school for incorrect uniform?

For the past years students and teachers have clashed over the issues of regulating students attire.  I strongly agree that students should be put out of school for wearing the incorrect uniform.reason been, the uniform is very important because it gives a school a sense of identity, It  helps to keep students attention on learning and not fashion . and its less financial difficulties.

A student attending a school and not wearing his/her correct uniform will this student be easily identified in public as a member an particular institution? no they will not. uniforms are a way of grouping kids together as a form of easier identification. If kids dress similarly on schools grounds or if they go out on a streets, and happen to be in any trouble or get lost, it may be easier to locate them if they are wearing the correct uniform.Wearing school uniforms also lessens the possibility that kids will be caught wearing inappropriate clothing.

Students have push the limit of fashion styles because they want to resist being told what to wear. The school monitoring employee must decide if a borderline outfit is appropriate or not. for example if a student is shopping for school and bought a blue bag , the shoe should be in  full black and when the shoe was being purchased he/she  purposely bought a black shoe with blue areas just to match the bag and knowing its inappropriate, . Schools should not have to spend time and resources monitoring what students wear, yet they have no choice. Unfortunately, some parents would otherwise permit their children to dress in totally offensive or inappropriate ways knowing it is wrong .

When students all dress in uniform it lessens the financial burden for the parents and helps to close the gap between those students who are poor and those who are rich. When buying a few uniforms it is cheaper than going out and buying a bunch of new name brand outfits. With uniforms people will meet you and talk to you for your personality instead of what you wear. On top of that it makes you think that you are there to get an education and not for other unnecessary reasons school.

there are far more important things to be done than having to take time out to be talking over and over to students whom will not abide by the rule and wear the correct uniform.in this case the good is suffering for the bad because their time are also being wast.so student doing the wrong should change their views of life and be more aggressive toward their education.

12 Unforgettable Moments In VMA History: Live Snakes, Baby Bumps, Meat Dresses, Oh My!

Live snakes, 50 pounds of raw meat, and a pregnancy! No, I'm not talking about a class camping trip gone horribly awry. I'm talking about some of my all-time favorite moments in VMA history. The craziest, most over-the-top, most unexpected, only-on-MTV (because trust me, they'll let you do anything from hang yourself from the rafters of Radio City to make out with Madonnamoments. The VMAs are a night of more access to celebrities than a year's worth of gossip mags combined (except MUCH better music, and none of that who-wore-it-better stuff), where unforgettable live performances -- Eminem's army of bleached-blonde Marshall Mathers lookalikes storming Radio City at the 2000 VMAs -- and fleeting moments -- Beyonce's coy, joyous pat of her belly at the 2011 MTV VMAs -- instantly become the stuff of pop culture legend and lore.

Some of my all-time favorite VMA moments include Britney Spears' late arrival to home room -- which perfectly coincided with what would become the first of more than a decade's worth of VMA appearances -- during her 1999 VMA performance debut -- plus, well, a whole lot more Britney. Check out 12 of my favorite, most unforgettable moments in VMA history, vote for your favorite, and get ready for the VMAs by watching must-see moments from the 2011 VMAs.

1.) Madonna performs "Like A Virgin" at the first-ever VMAs in 1984: Neil Armstrong planted a flag in the ground to signify to the world that he'd landed on the moon. Madonna humped the stage at the first-ever VMAs in 1984 during her performance of "Like A Virgin" to signify to the world that she'd landed on the map. Decades later, the expectation of an appropriate level of inappropriateness during VMA performances still abides.

2.) Nirvana performs "Lithium" at the 1992 VMAs, chaos ensues: Back in the early '90s, when reality TV was basically just the nightly news and Snooki was just a 5-year-old figuring out how to perfect a pre-kindergarten hair poof, Nirvana gave one of their most unforgettable live performances (and perhaps the greatest rock performance in VMA history, despite an amp malfunction), Punking MTV execs by playing the first few lines of "Rape Me" (an anti-establishment hat tip), capped off by a perfect ending: Kurt Cobain smashing the band's instruments, Krist Novoselic accidentally smashing his face with a bass, and Dave Grohl bating Axl Rose, who'd allegedly challenged Kurt to a fight backstage before the show. The fun didn't stop there, though. Nirvana also sent a Michael Jackson impersonator to the stage to accept their Best Alternative Video VMA for "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

3.) Michael Jackson performs a 15-minute medley of hits at the 1995 VMAs: As the king of pop and the unofficial but undisputed king of MTV (sorry, Carson), Michael Jackson enjoyed an eminent and celebrated VMA career. In 1995, a year after he and then-wife Lisa Marie Presley shocked VMA viewers with their on-stage PDA (ahhhh, newlyweds), he opened the VMAs with a 15-minute medley of hits like "Billie Jean," "Beat It," "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" and "Black or White," backed by Slash on guitar, followed by Basically, the VMAs turned into a mini Michael Jackson concert. That same night, Michael and Janet Jackson shared the VMA stage when "Scream" picked up VMAs for Best Dance Video, Best Art Direction and Best Choreography.

4.) Courtney Love interrupts Madonna's interview the 1995 VMA Pre-Show: Oh, how I love a good, cold cat fight. Especially when it involves flying beauty products. And Madonna. And Courtney Love. No stranger to controversy (or to NGAF), Courtney Love crashed Madonna's interview with Kurt Loder at the VMA Pre-Show by throwing her compact onto the platform. A clearly annoyed Madonna, to her credit, stayed patient and detached until she eventually just shut. it. down. Oh, Courtney. There's a time and place for everything. And this wasn't it. Until it was.

5.) Fiona Apple wins Best New Artist at the 1997 VMAs, DNGAF: Fiona Apple won Best New Artist at the 1997 VMAs, and instead of thanking her label, management, and/or God, she used her time in front of the mic to remind viewers that "this world is bull****."  Because it was the '90s! And no one was happy!

6.) Britney Spears makes her VMA debut with "Baby One More Time" at the 1999 VMAs: Although she was essentially their opening act, Britney Spears kicked off *NSYNC's "Tearin' Up My Heart" VMA performance (and essentially managed to upstage them) with her own "Baby One More Time." NSYNC fans may remember the guys' sleveelessness and white-boy dreads and their dancers' now-hilarious skin-tight mock turtlenecks and lamé pants, but Britney Stans and pop culture obsessives will never forget the moment Britney stepped onto the VMA stage for the very first time.
Check out more unforgettable moments in VMA history, and vote for your favorite after the jump.

7.) Eminem performs "The Real Slim Shady/The Way I Am" with an Eminem army at the 2000 VMAs: Before he took over Radio City Music Hall, Eminem took to the streets of New York, leading a posse of hundreds of Emimen clones dressed in his then-signature style -- highlighter yellow buzz cut, oversized white tees, baggy jeans -- into the 2000 VMAs for his performance of "The Real Slim Shady" and "The Way I Am." The result was a mesmerizing moiré  of Marshal Mathers, and even when the real Slim Shady himself stood up, it was hard to correctly ID him. Eminem won the Best Male Video (in addition to Best Rap Video and Video Of The Year) that year for "The Real Slim Shady," and forebodingly, when he reached into his pocket to pull out his acceptance speech, he accidentally dumped out a handful of pills onto the stage. But after his legendary "The Real Slim Shady" performance -- perhaps one of best rap performances of the show's history -- Eminem dropped a classic zinger on stage by referring to the VMAs as "the one night where you can fit all these people I don't like into one room." Burn notice!

8.) Britney Spears performs "I'm A Slave 4 U" WITH A LIVE SNAKE at the 2001 VMAs: All it took to become an instant VMA legend and own one of the most unforgettable live performances in pop music was Britney Spears (in peak form), and a seven-foot albino python named Banana. Just say the words "Britney Spears" and "snake," and anyone who saw her iconic 2001 VMA performance (and surely you have if you're reading this) will immediately conjure the chill-inducing iconic image of Britney -- arrestingly sexy in a green bikini top and abs you could bounce a basketball off of -- fearlessly gyrating across the dangerously pyro-rigged stage, with a wild reptile draped over her shoulders like NBD.
+ WATCH BRITNEY SPEARS' "I'M A SLAVE 4 U" PERFORMANCE AT THE 2011 VMAs.

9.) Rihanna performs "Disturbia" atop a wooden volcano on wheels at the 2008 VMAs: Am I the only one who still goes hard for Rihanna's 2008 VMA performance of "Disturbia"? Staging a televised production of "scary" could easy veer off into campy "It's A Small World After All" territory (nothing's scarier than scary-gone-cheesy) but Rihanna nailed both suspenseful and sexy and managed to throw in nods to the White Stripes and steampunk. Why are we not still talking about that? I am.

10.) Janet Jackson performs a dance tribute in honor and memory of Michael Jackson at the 2009 VMAs: With Michael Jackson's untimely passing less than three months prior, the 2009 VMAs could not go on without a fitting tribute to the King of Pop. After a sobering eulogy by Madonna, Janet Jackson, along with some of the best dancers and dancers and choreographers in the game, let loose a mind-bending pop spectacle of theatrics, special effects, and superhuman dance. Through her post-modern performance of "Scream," in lockstep with the visual of her brother on the screen behind her -- she allowed Michael to live -- and dance -- again, before blowing a kiss to her brother above, leaving the astonished audience at Radio City -- and watching on TV -- transcended and gutted.

11.) Lady Gaga eschews couture in favor of a meat dress at the 2010 VMAs: The VMA invite
pretty much comes with a mandate to dress COMPLETELY NUTS. And apparently Lady Gaga misread "completely nuts" as "completely meat," because she wore 50 pounds of it to the VMAs. Ring a bell? Meat dress! You remember now, right?

12.) Beyonce reveals her baby bump at the 2011 VMAs: Ohey, remember when Beyonce let the ENTIRE WORLD in on a little secret? Here's a refresher: after NAILING her debut performance of "Love On Top" (when you're Beyonce, all you really need is a sparkly blazer, a leotard and that smile), Beyonce opened her jacket and patted her belly to reveal that an itty, bitty baby Blue Ivy was burgeoning inside of her. IN CASE YOU FORGOT. Oh, and then Twitter basically broke.

what are expectations for the music industry for 2013?
